Somewhere right now, a policy adviser is drafting a rule that will change your costs. An industry body is deciding what to argue for on your behalf. A journalist has your number saved for the worst week of your year, and a procurement officer is about to release a tender you could win. Most business leaders meet these people for the first time in a crisis.

Built to Last Canberra is about meeting them earlier. We'll map who influences your business and how, look at how policy and regulation get made, and cover advocacy, government procurement, working with industry bodies and partners, and getting a message across to a decision-maker who has ten minutes and forty other briefs on the desk. When public sentiment turns, communication decides a lot, so we'll spend time on media and crisis communication too.

Your host, Danica Bunch, has spent more than twenty years helping organisations through moments of public pressure. In Canberra she's joined on stage by people who work inside these systems every day. You'll leave with a clear picture of your own stakeholder map and a plan to build credible, useful relationships with the people on it, well before you need a favour.

Key Event highlights

TOUR-IMAGE.png
  • Your Stakeholder Map - Draw up who influences your business, from regulators and industry bodies to media and community.

  • How Policy Really Moves - A practical look at how regulation and policy decisions get made, and where businesses can contribute.

  • Government as a Customer - What procurement involves, and how smaller businesses can position for government work.

  • Media and Public Sentiment - Protecting your reputation when a local issue becomes a national headline.

  • Mastermind Tables - Work through a live stakeholder or reputation challenge with seven leaders from other sectors.

  • The Inner Circle - A closed Tuesday session with Danica on getting the right people in your corner when it matters.

Event Inclusions

Two days in the capital on how influence works, with the arrangements sorted.

  • Two Nights at Crystalbrook Aurora (Stay and Inner Circle packages)

You'll stay at Crystalbrook Aurora at 84 Bunda Street in Canberra's city centre. The forum is held at the hotel, which keeps the whole program in one place.

  • Breakfast on Monday and Tuesday (Stay and Inner Circle packages)

Breakfast from 7:00am on both mornings.

  • The Full-Day Built to Last Canberra Forum

Danica's keynote on influence and reputation, a panel of people who work inside government, policy and advocacy, afternoon mastermind tables and a spotlight session. 8:30am to 5:00pm.

  • Group Lunch and Refreshments

A group lunch at noon and refreshments through the day, with seating that mixes sectors on purpose.

  • Mastermind Tables

A structured peer advisory round at tables of eight. One person presents a challenge, the table asks clarifying questions and offers input, and the round ends with a clear next step before it rotates.

  • The Inner Circle (Inner Circle Package)

Tuesday from 8:15am to 12:30pm, then group lunch. A small, closed-room session with Danica on government and media relations, and how to have the right people in your corner before you need them.

Day 2: Who Shapes Your Business

Stay and Inner Circle guests have breakfast from 7:00am. Registration is at 8:15am, and we start at 8:30am.

Danica's keynote looks at the systems around your business: government, regulators, media, industry bodies and communities, and why understanding them is a leadership skill. A panel of people who work inside those systems follows, with a frank conversation about how decisions actually get made and what makes a business worth listening to.

Lunch is at noon. In the afternoon, mastermind tables take on real stakeholder and reputation challenges brought by the people at them. A spotlight session works through one or two in front of the room, and Danica closes at 5:00pm.

The casual group dinner at 6:00pm is open to anyone who wants to continue the conversation (own cost).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this for people who work in government?

It's designed for business leaders who deal with government, regulators, industry bodies or media, or who expect to. People who work in the public sector are welcome and add a lot to the conversation.

Is this about lobbying?

No. The focus is on understanding how influence and decision-making work so you can build credible relationships. Nobody will be teaching you to work the corridors.

My business doesn't deal with the government. Why come?

Every business is affected by regulation, public sentiment and media, even if it never bids for a government contract. The day helps you see those forces early, while you still have options.

Do I need to be a client of Danica's?

No. Built to Last Canberra is open to founders, business owners, executives and emerging leaders.
